Like many great stories, this one started over a beer.
While downing a few craft brews at a neighbourhood café, friends Brian Hickling (Creative Director) and Mike Maloney (PR Strategist) began chatting about the wealth of creative talent in Halifax… many working away in that very same café, tucked behind their undersized Macs and oversized headphones. We got to thinking: ‘Wouldn’t it be great if we could harness the power of all these people not just in the room but the entire city? There’s got to be a way for us to all work together.’
That’s when lightning struck. Why not create an event where all marketing disciplines – advertising, PR, marketing, social media and business strategy – could unite as one agency? But with a catch: only for one week, and only to help nonprofits, free of charge. With that simple nugget, the idea of our pop-up agency was born. Word quickly spread, and soon filmmaker and corporate strategist Chaz Thorne joined in as a partner and colleagues from every walk of life signed up for the cause.
The rest, as they say is history. We took on our first five official clients, jammed our sessions with top-notch talent, and were amazed at what could be accomplished when the right people got together for the right reasons. One idea alone from those early days is now on track to inject half a million dollars into Nova Scotia food banks over the next five years. Now that’s the power of a good idea!
With requests pouring in from around the globe to expand to other cities, we decided it was time for a bigger stage. Thanks to our sponsors and idea champions at NABS and Sun Life Financial, this dream is now a reality.
